Nissan Micra Overview
Nissan, the Japanese automaker launched the Micra back in the year 2010 with the intention of flexing the hands in the lucrative hatchback segment. But due to stiff competition in the Indian car market where rivals are selling between 15-20 thousand units every month, Micra did not achieve the expected results. So, to stay in the market Micra launched the facelifted model in 2013.
The vehicle got numerous changes on the inside and out but mechanically it remained the same. The fifth generation model of Nissan Micra made its debut at the Paris Motor show and it’s a major leap over the previous generation model. Nissan Micra Exteriors
This is where the facelift has got the most difference – the nose is completely different and it starts with a new bumper. It has a lot more lines on it, and the fog lamp cutouts are now quite Hyundai. There is a chrome underscore for the lower grille, and the upper grille now tapers at both ends and has a V-shaped chrome addition that is reminiscent of the international models. The headlamps have gone from organic round ‘eyes’ to an angular arrowhead shape. From the front this truly is a new car.
Walk around to the side, and you can see that Nissan has missed out on an opportunity – beside the lovely new alloy wheel design, there isn’t a single stand-out feature to suggest that this is a redesigned car. The creases from the front bumper merge into the wheelarch and become a slightly stronger shoulder line.There is no obvious extra crease in the doors; they’ve even left the oval side indicator on the front fender and eschewed mirror-mounted indicators! This is a definite no-no if you want to appear premium, and it is puzzling that it isn’t present especially when the Micra Primo offered it.
At the back the big change is the rear bumper. Like the front, it juts out more and has more cuts and creases on it. The number plate recess is a hexagonal one, and there’s an underscoring crease as well. What makes it look odd is, the exhaust pipe is hidden so well that you can’t see it most of the time – a chrome-tipped exhaust would have gone down a storm with the snazzy lines – and the hatch needed a lip to help it merge with the added length of the new bumper.
The tail-lamps are new as well; though they retain the same shape as the original, the brake lamps are now LED strips. The internal elements have been rearranged as well, and by itself it does look like an improvement over the old tail-lamps. Oh, and no one will point out that one reverse bulb isn’t working any more, because they’ve thrown in a bulb apiece for each side. The new lens has a sharply defined ‘edge’ to it, and it makes it look like the Micra’s hips have gotten wider – not necessarily a good thing. The new exterior design is surely a significant step up from the old model. More people will like it because it isn’t effeminate – but it doesn’t seem like a cohesive design like the old one was, and I’m not sure it will age as gracefully.
Nissan Micra Interiors
This is where the extent of the Micra facelift truly hits you – the interior has changed just as much as, if not more than, the exterior. Some of it is subtle – the seat fabrics have changed, as have the sun visors – and some of it will be noticed even before you settle in, like the new centre console and steering controls.
Slip into the driver’s seat, and the first thing that you’ll notice is that new center console. It’s now another shared part with the Sunny. The rectangular vents at the top look slightly out of place, but the chrome accents make it look more premium than before. It’s the same with the silver rings for the two remaining circular vents. The audio system has changed as well; the integrated unit that had no Bluetooth or USB connectivity and that made it very difficult to upgrade to a standard 1- or 2-DIN unit has been replaced by a standard 2-DIN head unit that has all connections that you could want, including aux, USB and Bluetooth. It is a simple-looking unit and it still isn’t one of the best in the segment but it gets the job done.
The climate control remains the same – the center console is finished in gloss black for the top-spec variants, and matt grey for the rest. I’m not sure I’d want a gloss black centre console, it is much too prone to fingerprints and scratches. Other differences discernible from the driver’s seat are the new fonts and positioning of the multi-function display. The fonts are clearer to read than before, and more pleasing to the eye. The XV variants also offer driver’s seat height adjustment now. The good bits like the six-step intermittent wiper speed, rear defogger, rear wiper and twin gloveboxes remain.
There is no change to the design of the cabin, so the space and comfort remain as good as before, but backseat occupants will be happy to hear that the front passenger seat back now has a pocket – giving the backseat occupant at least one place to stow things besides the sole cup holder in the centre. Nissan claims that NVH has been improved as well, but the only discernible change on our short drive was the engine note: a lot of harshness has gone from the petrol’s noise thanks to increased sound deadening in the firewall.
The Micra now offers ABS on five out of seven variants, meaning that only the base models do not get the safety feature – a complete (not to mention welcome) turnaround from the previous one, where ABS was available only on the petrol XV. Get the automatic and you’ll even get four airbags, which is good, but not equal to the i20 auto’s six airbags.
Nissan Micra Transmission
Nissan Micra continues to house the same set of petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.2L petrol engine makes 77PS and 104Nm of max torque, paired to CVT transmission. The car isn’t available with the petrol manual transmission which could be a disappointment for many. On the other hand, the 1.5L dCi 4-cylinder diesel mill produces 64PS and 160Nm of peak torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox.
The petrol version of Micra sports the same CVT transmission that is working in Sunny sedan. The performance isn’t bad at all and the gearbox has been tuned to adapt different driving styles, however, the focus remains clearly on deriving better fuel efficiency. The car does pulls better once the revs get past the 3500rpm mark, however, the open roads driving isn’t much exciting.
The diesel one has been reworked and the drivability has been improved from previous versions. The engine barely lags in cities and can easily pick up the speed in the third gear above 20kmph without any fuss. It feels like a naturally aspirated engine with the torque instantly available on tap.The car comes with respectable fuel efficiency, thanks to the fine-tuned engine petrol and diesel engines. Nissan Micra Driving
The New Nissan Micra based on the new V platform really aims to deliver what Nissan engineers call the Micra DNA which consists of three key points – easy to drive and park, reliability and overall user friendliness. It’s a car that’s really designed to combat the heavily congested city streets and is designed to deliver a driving experience which is a little less stressful in the Micra. So to start with, all variants of the Micra (XE, XE Plus, XL and the top-of-the-line XV) all come with an electric assist power steering as standard which really does make driving in the city so much easier. It also adjusts for tilt across all models and comes with a driver’s side Airbag as standard too. However, only the top-end XV gets a front passenger Airbag. Visibility is excellent all around with a slim A-pillar and even when you look back there’s no obstruction from the C-pillar making the glass area almost wraparound like. The sideview mirrors (electric adjust and auto fold are only on the XV) are large and provide for good visibility and there’s not too much of a blindspot.
The steering feels really good to hold and has grips on the 10/2 position and is slightly dished out. Although it feels great to hold, it does somewhat feels a tad too large. Even though the horn button on the steering is light and easy to use, we found that the horn itself is quite weak and the Micra desperately needs to have dual horns to cope with our country’s driving conditions. The instrument cluster is a fairly straightforward simple to read affair. There’s a speedometer that takes centerstage and the tachometer to its left. On the right of the speedometer are warning lights and a digital display which show the odometer and trip readings in addition to distance to empty and a real time fuel economy readout. This ‘Drive Computer’ as Nissan likes to call it, is a standard feature across all trim levels.
Cranking up the XV is a very un-hatch like experience. Here’s why. To begin with, the Intelligent Key (yes, it’s only on the XV trim) can nestle in your pocket and all you do is approach the car and open the door. Once in the car you’ll need to depress the clutch and hit the Start/Stop button to crank the engine. It’s a feature that’s unique to the segment and no other small car has this. On the move, the Nissan Micra is really quite refined and smooth. There’s almost no suspension noise that filters through, except when taking really large potholes and bumps. However, you will feel them more than you would in a European hatch and this is largely because of the fact that the Micra is much lighter in terms of build. The suspension is tuned for comfort and the Indian Micra has different suspension tuning than any of the other world-Micra’s to enable it to tackle bad roads and deliver a supple, comfortable and consistent ride quality. The car isn’t in the same league when it comes to handling at three digit speeds as some of the German cars are, but then the Micra’s environment is really city roads where it does quite well without shaking up its occupants even on bad surfaces.
Nissan Micra Safety
Nissan Micra’s braking ability is moderate and the car stops in the straight line without any problem. This time around, the carmaker has upped the safety aspects. The new Nissan Micra comes with standard dual front airbags and rear parking sensors. Other variants include features such as Brake Assist, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, rear parking camera, central locking, rear wiper, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. The vehicle also comes with aspects such as traffic sign recognition, intelligent lane intervention, speed warning device, high beam assist, intelligent emergency braking and blind spot warning.

Nissan Micra Final Thought
Nissan Micra gets a timely refresh indeed with minor tweaks but then is it sufficient to keep the hatch floating among competition is what will be determined after its official prices are out. One thing is for sure that the new Micra is not going to be priced lower than the existing version.
The Micra has got mixed reactions in terms of looks but then the engine has always garnered positive reaction. The drivability of Micra has always been positive and with the new Micra the same is continued. Interiors of the car did not seem premium earlier which Nissan claims to have sorted with this one. With tweaked looks, refurnished interiors and a new automatic option, Micra gets ready to take on its competition.
